Which Medeco Models This Applies To

Medeco master key systems are not interchangeable across product lines. The Biaxial series, still common in Los Angeles commercial buildings installed between 1995 and 2010, uses a 0.495-inch diameter cylinder with angled key cuts and a rotating pin-tumbler sidebar. The M3 series, introduced in 2005, adds a slider mechanism to the Biaxial platform and requires M3-specific pinning kits; an M3 cylinder will accept a Biaxial key but will not master-key correctly with Biaxial components. The X4, Medeco’s newer commercial grade, uses a different keyway entirely and is not backward-compatible.

Identification is straightforward if you know where to look. The cylinder face is stamped with the series name - Biaxial, M3, or X4 - and the key bow carries the same marking. For master key systems, the critical detail is the key set number, etched on the key shoulder and recorded on the original keying schedule. Without that number, we cannot determine your system’s hierarchical levels (which doors the grand master, master, and change keys operate). We have rebuilt systems from scratch when Los Angeles property managers lost their records, but it costs more and takes longer than working from an existing schedule.

On OEM versus aftermarket: Medeco’s factory pinning kits use proprietary angled bottom pins and sidebar fingers machined to tight tolerances. Aftermarket equivalents exist for Biaxial systems, but we have seen inconsistent sidebar engagement in cylinders pinned with non-Medeco components, particularly in coastal Los Angeles where salt air accelerates wear at the contact points. Signs Your Medeco Master Key System Is Failing

• A change key opens doors outside its assigned suite or floor. This is the most serious symptom. It means a master pin has sheared or worn to a height where it no longer creates a unique shear line, allowing the wrong key to align the plug. In a master key system, this accelerates because master pins create additional wear surfaces. Once shavings appear, cylinder failure is typically 6-18 months away depending on use frequency.
• A cylinder that previously worked smoothly now catches at the 10 o’clock or 2 o’clock position. This is the sidebar binding in its groove, often caused by a bent sidebar spring or accumulated debris. In master key systems, the problem propagates because all cylinders share the same keying geometry; one contaminated cylinder can spread grit via the master key to others.
• Keys cut by Medeco’s Los Angeles authorized duplicator no longer work reliably. If factory-cut keys fail, the cylinder tolerances have shifted beyond specification. This happens when master pins wear unevenly, creating multiple false shear lines that factory keys cannot consistently navigate.

DIY or Call Us?

There is no safe DIY path for Medeco master key systems. The cylinders contain up to six pin stacks, each with two or three pins (bottom, master, sometimes construction master), plus a sidebar with three spring-loaded fingers under tension. Disassembly without a pinning kit and follower tool will scatter components; reassembly without factory specs will create security holes where keys operate doors they should not.
