To identify your model, remove the interior thumb turn and look for a stamped model number on the chassis edge. The backset - the distance from the door edge to the center of the cylinder - is either 2-3/8″ or 2-3/4″ on Sargent deadbolts. Signs Your Sargent Deadbolt Installation Is Failing

• Key turns but bolt does not retract. The internal cam has sheared or the tailpiece has stripped where it engages the bolt mechanism. We see this most often in coastal Los Angeles neighborhoods where salt air accelerates corrosion inside the chassis.
• Thumb turn spins freely with no resistance. The spindle connecting the thumb turn to the bolt mechanism has broken or the retaining clip has failed. This leaves the deadbolt operable only from the exterior with a key.
• Bolt sticks or requires excessive force to extend or retract. The bolt face is binding against the strike plate, or the internal springs have weakened. In older Los Angeles homes with settling frames, misalignment between bolt and strike is common.
• Key works from one side only. The tailpiece is partially disengaged or the cylinder set screw has loosened. This is a progressive failure; the key will eventually stop working entirely.
• Visible gap or looseness in the exterior cylinder. The mounting screws have backed out or the cylinder collar has cracked. This compromises both function and security, as the cylinder can be pried or rotated out of position.

A homeowner can safely check two things: whether the mounting screws are loose and whether the strike plate is misaligned. Tighten visible screws with a screwdriver. If the bolt strikes below or above the strike plate opening, the plate may need repositioning.

What goes wrong with DIY deadbolt installation: drilling the bore at the wrong angle, which causes the bolt to bind; failing to seat the strike plate flush with the jamb, which stresses the mechanism; and stripping the set screw that secures the cylinder tailpiece, which leaves the lock inoperable. The tailpiece on Sargent deadbolts is under spring tension and must be aligned precisely with the chassis cam.
