Which Sargent Models This Applies To

Sargent master key systems span several product lines, and matching the correct cylinder to your existing keyway is where most ordering errors happen. We service the 6300 line (standard commercial rim and mortise cylinders), the 6500 line (LFIC large format interchangeable core), and the 4800 line (small format interchangeable core, SFIC). The 6500 LFIC and 4800 SFIC are not interchangeable; a property with 6500 cores cannot accept 4800 hardware without replacing the entire housing. Check the face of the cylinder: 6300 series stamps include “SARGENT 6300” and a keyway letter such as LA, LB, or LD; 6500 LFIC cores show “SARGENT 6500” with a control key separate from the operating key; 4800 SFIC cores are visibly smaller, roughly the diameter of a quarter.

OEM Sargent cylinders and key blanks carry the Sargent name and are pinned at the factory or by an authorized service center. We also stock quality aftermarket equivalents from Falcon and Corbin Russwin where the keyway matches and the customer does not require factory-original documentation. Signs Your Sargent Master Key System Is Failing

• Key works in some cylinders but not others in the same master key hierarchy. This usually indicates a worn pin chamber in one cylinder, not a key problem. The master pin stack has shifted or worn unevenly, breaking the shear line alignment in that specific lock while others in the system remain functional.
• Sub-master key opens doors outside its assigned level. This is a master key system compromise, often from a miscut replacement key or a cylinder that was repinned incorrectly during a previous change. In a properly pinned Sargent system, a sub-master for the second floor should not operate a third-floor lock.
• Key requires jiggling or excessive force to turn. Warded keyways in Sargent LA and LB keyways collect brass dust and atmospheric grit; in Los Angeles, the combination of dry air and occasional Santa Ana wind events accelerates this. The cylinder needs cleaning and lubrication, or the bottom pins have developed flat spots from repeated use.
• Control key will not remove the core from a 6500 or 4800 housing. The control lug on the back of the core has seized or the retaining clip in the housing has fatigued. Forcing the control key risks snapping it inside the core, which turns a $180 cylinder swap into a housing replacement.
• Recently rekeyed cylinder fails to match the master key within weeks. We see this in buildings near the coast, in Marina del Rey and Redondo Beach specifically, where salt air corrodes standard steel bottom pins. Sargent offers nickel-silver and stainless pin kits for these environments; if your previous locksmith used standard brass or steel pins, the corrosion timeline is predictable.

What we do not recommend: disassembling a pinned cylinder, attempting to decode a master key system with pinning kits purchased online, or forcing a stuck control key. Sargent master pins are manufactured to thousandth-inch tolerances; a pinning error compromises every lock in that master key group, and the error may not be discovered until a key opens the wrong door. The control key operates a shear line separate from the operating key; if you break it off in the core, extraction requires drilling and the core is destroyed.
