- Credential reader blinks red on valid cards. The RFID coil inside the reader module has separated from its solder joint, a failure we see often in Los Angeles because the coil adhesive degrades in dry heat above 85 degrees, which it is for four months each year in the San Fernando Valley.
- Lock enters “fail-secure” and won’t open from outside. The smart module has lost communication with the credential database or the internal relay has burned closed. An owner can safely check three things before calling: the battery voltage with a multimeter (four AA alkalines should read 6.0V or higher), whether the door latches smoothly without the smart module engaged, and whether the credential cards work on other readers in the same building. Beyond that, Sargent smart lock modules contain a motorized clutch and a credential coil that must be calibrated to the specific chassis; incorrect torque on the mounting screws cracks the PCB, and we’ve replaced modules that were damaged in DIY attempts where the owner used a standard Phillips instead of the specified T10 Torx.
The firmware programming requires ASSA ABLOY’s proprietary software and a dealer-level credential.
